New York: A parking garage in the financial district of lower Manhattan in the US collapsed, killing one worker, injuring five others and damaging several vehicles. The officers provided this information. The concrete floor of the garage collapsed like a house of cards and the vehicles were buried under it, he said. People present around the time of the incident said that as soon as the garage collapsed, the voices of people started coming from there.
Liam Guetta, a student at nearby Pace University, said it felt like an earthquake. Another student, Jedes Speler, said how terrifying the scene was, it could be gauged from the fact that the people present around felt as if a huge explosion had created a crack in the earth’s inner layer. Speller said he initially thought there had been a bomb blast. Some other students said that they saw cars falling from the building.
John Esposito, chief of operations for the fire department, said a search was ongoing at the garage. One employee, who was trapped on the upper floor, was pulled out through a neighboring terrace, he said. Esposito said the employee was conscious. He was constantly pleading for help. He was pulled out of the garage through the roof of the adjacent building. He said that all five people injured in the incident have been admitted to the hospital, out of which the condition of four is said to be stable.
The parking garage, located a few blocks from the New York Stock Exchange and the Brooklyn Bridge, collapsed around 4 p.m. Tuesday, according to Esposito. As a result, nearby Pace University evacuated students on campus and canceled all evening classes to assess the safety of the building. The cause of the parking garage collapse is not clear at this time.
