Director of the Scientific and Clinical Center of Precision and Regenerative Medicine at the Institute of Basic Medicine and Biology of Kazan Federal University, corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Tatarstan, Albert Rizvanov, said to Izvestia that the new coronavirus substrain Arcturus is potentially more contagious.
According to the biologist, the new substrain is a slightly modified version of the coronavirus, which differs mainly by a mutation of the spike protein, which theoretically makes it more infectious and pathogenic. At the same time, the specialist reassured the Russians, adding that when analyzing the clinical picture, it is not yet necessary to talk about an increase in the severity of the disease.
Despite this, since February 2023, a new strain of coronavirus has shown an increase in the number of cases, which may indicate its greater contagiousness compared to previous variations of the virus. The mutations have altered the antigenic properties of the strain, which directly affects how the immune system perceives it.
Due to a decrease in the vaccination rate and a decrease in general immunity, it allows the coronavirus infection to be in a smoldering state. And this will continue to happen for a very long time, if not forever, – the doctor summed up.
