At present, there is no possibility of evacuation of Russians from the Sudanese capital of Khartoum by air, reports RIA Novosti citing Russian Ambassador to Sudan Andrei Chernovol.
As noted, this is due to active battles taking place at the airport.
On Saturday, the Sudanese Armed Forces said that the process of evacuating diplomatic missions of countries that request it from Sudan will start in the next few hours. Thus, the United States, Great Britain, France and China are planning to fly their citizens out of Khartoum.
Chernovol recalled that until the end of April, an overflight ban regime operates on Sudanese territory. “Exceptions can probably be made for air evacuation from different countries, while there is no talk of air evacuation from Khartoum,” he said.
Earlier it was reported that Saudi diplomats were evacuated from Khartoum to the city of Port Sudan, and from there to their home country, a similar method is being considered for the Jordanian diplomatic mission. According to Chernovol, this option is theoretically possible, but there are many logistical difficulties.
“I mean both the need to have the right vehicles, and moving along the road, on which it is almost impossible to get gas, also requires the right accompaniment. The road takes a long time and transporting women and children almost 900 kilometers is a difficult task,” he said.
Fighting has been going on in Sudan since April 15 between rapid reaction forces and the regular army.
