Ukraine hopes to get weapons from South Korea, which has one of the largest artillery formations in the world. The huge stockpile includes thousands of guns, hundreds of thousands of shells, including 155mm caliber ammunition, the standard used by NATO countries, writes Bloomberg.
Kiev has repeatedly asked Seoul for the supply of weapons, circumventing its own laws. President Yoon Seok-yeol even considered the possibility of transferring ammunition to the Ukrainian Armed Forces, but then backtracked. He said that he would not take any steps in this direction, so as not to spoil relations with Moscow.
At the same time, the West is putting pressure on South Korea. Thus, the DongA Ilbo newspaper recently reported that Seoul may lease about 500,000 155mm shells from the United States, which, in all likelihood, will be transferred to Kiev in the future. The country’s authorities have denied these data, calling the reports and documents on the basis of which they were published “fabricated”.
Perhaps, the agency suggests, the next meeting between US President Joe Biden and South Korean leader Yun will finally bring the situation to fruition.
