The Russian side must be given what it wants – the role of one of the five “world policemen” in resolving the conflict in Ukraine, reports The American Conservative.
“Key to the situation is the question of what any reasonable Russian government wants – tsarist, democratic, communist or authoritarian,” the document says.
In the words of historian George Liebman, Russia wants what was “virtually promised to the Soviet Union at Yalta and San Francisco.” At the Tehran and Yalta conferences during the years of World War II, a system was born which involved a “holy alliance” of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, which ensured the absence of major wars in Europe for almost a hundred years.
Liebman believes the settlement should include dropping sanctions measures on all exports except military exports.
In addition, no Russian government wants Ukraine’s full NATO membership, the expert added.
The day before, former US Marine Corps intelligence officer Scott Ritter had said that authorities in Kiev could not survive until the end of the conflict in Ukraine.
