Despite the crises, the perfume industry in Syria maintains its tradition

April 29, 2023

Mazen Zakour has been working in the perfume field since he was young, he would visit his father and grandfather’s shop, observe their work and gain experience from them, and learn how to make the best products from perfumery from oil, distilled water and alcohol.

Traditional and Western scents emanate from his small shop on Al-Hamra Street in Damascus, the Syrian capital. Forty-something perfumer Mazen Zakour is always keen to spray the notes of his products to attract passers-by on the road.

And after the Syrian crisis affected the different sectors of the country, the perfume industry was also affected, and the import of oils became very difficult and their extraction very expensive, so Zakour worked on the manufacture of his own device to extract the oils necessary for the manufacture of perfumes.

In light of the electricity crisis in Syria, it is still difficult to operate the device, and despite this, Zakour believes that it is still competing in the perfume industry market.
