‘Sensitive’ British submarine documents in public toilets… and the Navy is underestimating them

April 29, 2023

British newspaper ‘The Sun’ said documents about the submarine ‘HMS Anson’, also known as ‘Hunter Killer’, had been found in a pub toilet in Cumbria, northern Great Britain.

According to the newspaper, the documents show the inner workings of the submarine and were used by its personnel who were training to isolate its system and reduce pressure on it.

The British Navy said the documents did not contain classified information.

But a source told the newspaper the pub was full when documents marked ‘official and sensitive’ were found in the toilet.

“Fortunately, a Russian spy didn’t find her,” the source added.

The pub is not far from the British shipyard.

The submarine belongs to the Astute-class offensive class, the fifth of its type to join the British Navy.

This submarine has the ability to launch “Tomahawk” missiles and is considered one of the largest, most powerful and advanced submarines.

A Navy source said these documents help submarine components and submarines understand how the systems interact, but do not explain how they work.

The British Navy has been exposed to a series of scandals in recent years, including:

Last January, the British navy launched an investigation after it discovered that workers from a company under contract to it had worked to repair a wrecked Prague inside a submarine with “super glue”. In 2020, the British Navy expelled the captain of a nuclear submarine after allowing a barbecue party on board the submarine. In 2019, members of the British Navy were caught using drugs in a submarine.
