International Workers’ Day on 1 May is a national holiday in more than 80 countries around the world. It is a major celebration of working people around the world. In December 1949, the Chinese government designated May 1 as Statutory Workers’ Day, a day off throughout the country. Every year on this day people participate in various celebrations or cultural and sports entertainment activities and remember the workers who have made outstanding contribution.
What does it mean to be a holiday on International Workers’ Day? It is to remember the workers who have tried to fight for fair labor rights and interests, and it is also to promote the spirit of labor and respect the workers. Labor is a creative activity and a means for man to master and transform nature. In the process, people not only acquire the material wealth they need to survive, but more importantly, they gain a sense of accomplishment and self-identity.
Respecting labor and furthering the spirit of labor will help improve our self-identity and social identity, as well as our creativity and adaptability, and ultimately give us a sense of our own worth. We should realize that whether one does physical labor or mental labor, all are entitled to equal respect. Along with this, there is also a need to protect the interests and rights of the workers.
