Ukraine does not have the possibility of joining NATO as long as there is a military conflict on its territory. This statement was made during an interview given to the Italian newspaper La Repubblica by Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda.
“It would be too difficult. We know it, Ukrainians know it,” he said.
Nauseda believes that NATO should come up with a new action plan for Kiev – something Ukraine will do after the conflict ends. According to the head of state, at the next summit of the alliance in Vilnius, “this will be the most difficult question”.
The President recalled that Lithuania is in favor of drawing up a roadmap for Ukraine’s accession to NATO. At the same time, a number of other states consider such integration unacceptable.
Previously, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Dmitry Kuleba, asked to set the conditions for Ukraine’s accession to NATO. According to him, the countries of the alliance should discuss this question during the NATO summit in Vilnius in July 2023.
