Chinese chess player won the world championship for the first time

Chinese chess player Ting Liren won the 17th world title in world chess history by defeating his opponent Ian Nepomniachtchi of Russia in the rapid chess playoff of the 2023 International Chess Federation (FIDE) World Chess Championship held in Astana, Kazakhstan. He is also the first world chess champion from China.

This year’s World Chess Championship 2023 is the most important activity of FIDE. Each World Chess Championship consists of 14 games of slow chess and the first player to score 7.5 points wins. Ting Liren and Nepomniachtchi leveled the score after the first 13th game in this year’s World Chess Championship. In the crucial 14th game, both players set two records for number of rounds and duration of the game since the start of the activity, this time with 90 rounds and 6 hours and 33 minutes.

On 30 April, four rapid chess playoffs of 25 minutes each were held. After three games, both played a 1.5-1.5 draw. In the fourth game, Ting Leiren forced her opponent to make mistakes with accurate moves. He eventually defeated his opponent with a score of 2.5–1.5. In this way he achieved the most important victory of his career so far.
