Fears of a repeat of the Sudanese scenario. Chad is on a hot plate

– Published on:

Chadian journalist and expert, Moussa Ali Moussa explained to Sky News Arabia the causes of the tension on the Chadian street, saying:

The crisis began with the formation of the national unity government resulting from the (global national dialogue), which was boycotted by a large part of the political opposition, civil society and armed movements. The protest against the results of the comprehensive national dialogue, by organizing mass demonstrations in several Chadian cities, quickly turned into violence and clashes between protesters and security forces, killing more than 200 people, injuring hundreds and arresting more than 1,600, according to human rights organizations.

A large number of dissidents have fled abroad, and some of them to the forests bordering Central Africa, to organize their ranks and perhaps then consider engaging in armed action. This political crisis that accompanied the birth of the government of national unity led by the former opposition party and leader of the National Union for Development and Renewal party, Saleh Kabzabo, had a great impact on the performance government, and took a lot of time and effort. Most of the government’s attention has been focused on how to handle this acute political crisis and how to contain it and mask its side effects before it escalates.

Effects of the Sudanese crisis

Regarding the impact of the crisis in Sudan on the situation in Chad, Moussa said:

Chad and Sudan have social and cultural ties represented in the tribal tide, as there are many common tribes between the two countries. The two countries share economic ties, as many Chadian products come from Sudan and Chadian traders use Port Sudan to import their products from abroad. Sudan has a very important role in the stability or instability of the political situation in Chad.

Darfur, on the other hand, these movements were supported by the Sudanese government, while the regime of Idriss Deby supported the Sudanese armed movements. Chad hosts thousands of Sudanese refugees who entered the country following the conflict in Darfur in 2003. Since the outbreak of clashes in Khartoum between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces, more than 20,000 people have sought refuge in Chad, and the number is constantly increasing.

Pessimistic expectations

Regarding his view of the nature of events in the coming period, Musa expressed his pessimism saying:

Continued fighting in Sudan could worsen the security situation at the borders between the two countries, and complicate the economic and humanitarian situation. The lengthening of the Sudanese crisis could lead to the return of Chadian rebel movements to the east, in particular the Darfur region, and from there they would operate against the Chadian government.

There are fears that the Central African region will experience great and important developments, and that the continuation of the situation as it is threatens great chaos, divisions and the birth of rebel movements everywhere, and this is fueled by the absence of the state and the state of misery experienced by African society, in addition to international competition for the resources of the brown continent.
