“Over 2,200 people will attend the Coronation Ceremony of Their Majesties the King and Queen Consort at Westminster Abbey,” the Buckingham Palace website said in a statement. The event, scheduled for May 6, will bring together representatives from 203 countries and territories, including around 100 heads of state.
Almost all members of the British royal family were invited to the coronation ceremony. They include the King’s eldest son and the next in the royal line of succession, William, Prince of Wales, his wife Catherine, Princess of Wales, and the couple’s children. William and Kate’s eldest son, Prince George of Wales, will play the role of pageboy and help carry his grandfather’s long train of robes around Westminster Abbey during the ceremony.
Prince Harry will attend the coronation without his wife Meghan. He confirmed his presence in April. King Charles’ siblings Princess Anne, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward are also expected to attend the ceremony.
Members of other royal families from Europe and elsewhere in the world would also have been invited, breaking the tradition of previous coronations where British kings were virtually the only monarchs present at the ceremony.
Some British politicians are also expected to attend the event. These include the current British Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, as well as some ministers in his cabinet. Seats are also guaranteed for former prime ministers.
Foreign heads of state are invited, including European leaders and US President Joe Biden. However, Biden said First Lady Jill Biden would attend the ceremony instead.
More than 1250 volunteers and young people were invited to attend the coronation or other events. Buckingham Palace has confirmed that 450 “COVID heroes” who have helped the UK cope with the pandemic have been invited to attend a service in person at Westminster Abbey.
Recall that during the last coronation of the British monarch, Queen Elizabeth II in 1953, around 8,000 people gathered at Westminster Abbey to attend the ceremony.
