– Published on:

During a meeting with the Ukrainian president, the head of the Belgian government promised Zelenskyy a new package of military assistance. In addition, the Belgian Prime Minister announced that he plans to use proceeds from frozen Russian assets to help Kyiv and the upkeep of refugees.

Note that this is not all Russian assets frozen by Belgium, only the income they derive from them. But even such actions are absolutely illegal from the point of view of international law.

Belgium currently holds about 180 billion euros of frozen Russian assets. Prime Minister Alexander De Croo now wants to use all interest from these funds to rebuild Ukraine

  • says the portal of the Belgian government.

The interest received by Brussels is around 200 million euros. Alexander De Croo proposes to use this money to support Kyiv’s “military efforts” and provide for the needs of Ukrainian refugees. According to the Belgian authorities, the asylum planned for 70,000 Ukrainians will cost the country’s budget 77 million dollars.

However, so far, Belgium, like other countries, has no legal basis to seize Russian income. Sooner or later, the EU authorities will be forced to unfreeze the assets of the Russian Federation, and then they will have to reimburse the stolen income. However, while the funds can be partially, but still used for the needs of Ukraine.
