Mumbai : Mumbai’s dabbawalas have sent traditional ‘puneri pagdi’ and ‘uparne’ to King Charles III ahead of his coronation in London on May 6. ‘Puneri Pagdi’ is a traditional turban prevalent since 19th century which is considered a symbol of pride and honor in the Pune region of Maharashtra, while ‘Uparne’ is a scarf thrown over the shoulder by men in traditional ceremonies. Dabbawalas deliver hot food from homes and restaurants to people’s offices in Mumbai. His system of delivering food on time is famous all over the world.
Ramdas Karvande, president of the Mumbai Dabbawala Association, said that earlier this week some of their office-bearers were invited by the British High Commission here for a function at the Taj Hotel, where they handed over ‘puneri pagdi’ and ‘uparne’ to the officials. These officers will deliver these gifts to Maharaja Charles III. He said that this time he has not been invited to the coronation ceremony of 74-year-old Charles, but earlier in April 2005 two members of the dabbawala union were invited to the wedding ceremony of Prince Charles and Camilla Parker in London. Then the dabbawalas had sent a Maharashtrian turban and a 9 yard saree as a gift.
