Lima: A massive fire at a gold mine in southern Peru has killed at least 27 workers working the night shift there. Officials have given this information. A total of 175 workers were safely evacuated following the accident, the mine company Yanaquihua said in a statement. The statement said that the 27 laborers who lost their lives were working for a contractor who provides training in mining operations.
Government officials said the cause of the incident was being investigated. According to some media reports, preliminary investigations indicate that a short circuit in a part of the mine, located about 100 meters below the surface, triggered the explosion. The Public Ministry has said that investigators are trying to determine the cause of the incident.
