Lexus LX will soon have a hybrid version

– Published on:

An exciting journey into a world of innovative technology – prepare for a new level of fuel economy and performance in the Lexus LX Hybrid.

In pursuit of power

In the Lexus crossover and SUV lineup, the LX is the flagship model. Completely redesigned for 2021, the full-size SUV ditched the mighty 5.7-liter V8 engine in favor of a smaller 3.5-liter V6 engine. Keep in mind it has twin turbos, so it’s more powerful and much more efficient than the voracious V8.

But the LX won’t win any efficiency awards with its twin-turbo V6. Yes, it’s more fuel efficient than a V8, but you’ll be lucky if you hit 6km/litre when sitting in heavy traffic. However, it seems that Lexus wants to improve the environmental performance of the giant SUV. A recent trademark filing suggests an electrified version could be coming soon.

We found a trademark application in the World Intellectual Property Office database, which confirms the possibility of an updated car. Lexus has registered the LX 700h name with various intellectual property offices, including in the Philippines. If you’re familiar with the Lexus naming convention, the “h” suffix denotes a hybrid powertrain. It was filed on March 7, 2023, and the trademark is pending as of this writing. Interestingly, the LX 700h was dropped just days before the Toyota Tamaraw.

Power or respect for the environment?

So what could a hybrid LX look like if it goes into production? A possible answer will be suggested by the updated Toyota Sequioa. Like the LX, Sequioa changed the V8 engine to a twin-turbocharged V6. However, the Sequioa also has an electric motor built into the transmission. As a result, the total system power is 437 hp. and 790 Nm of torque.

If the LX 700h were to have this powertrain architecture, the horsepower and torque figures should be more or less the same. The hybrid might also be the most powerful powertrain option for the LX in terms of numbers. By comparison, the LX 600’s 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 develops 409 horsepower. and a torque of 600 Nm, which allows the car to accelerate to 100 km/h in 6.6 seconds.

If the hybrid version of the LX 700h has a more powerful electric motor and a larger battery, then it will be able to develop even more impressive performance, both in terms of acceleration and top speed. In addition, a hybrid drive can provide more economical fuel consumption and reduce the emission of harmful substances into the atmosphere, which is important for modern cars and the environment in general.

All in all, if Lexus offers a hybrid version of the LX 700h, it would be a great option for those looking for a more eco-friendly and fuel-efficient car, but who don’t want to compromise on power and performance.
