Guardiola: That’s why Haaland’s mission against Real Madrid was difficult

May 10, 2023

Despite Manchester City’s draw at the Bernabeu, the question of qualifying for the final has yet to be decided, according to Guardiola.

Spanish newspaper ‘Marca’ quoted Guardiola as saying: “We have to congratulate the whole team. What is important now for us is the second leg, which will never be easy.”

He added: “We scored when Real Madrid were better than us in the game. In the next game, we have to adjust the position of some players, especially with regard to the offensive line. We have to find spaces in front Haaland, who was being chased by Alba and Rudiger.”

On Haaland’s performance, Guardiola said: “The distances between the centre-backs and the two full-backs were full of players. It was not easy for Haaland, but he moved well and had chances.”

He warned of the danger of Toni Kroos and Vinicius Junior, stressing the need to watch them in the next encounter.

Midfielder Kevin De Bruyne scored a superb goal from a low shot to lead Manchester City to a 1-1 draw with Real Madrid in the first leg of the Champions League semi-finals on Tuesday.

The Belgian midfielder equalized midway through the second half after Vinicius Junior opened the scoring for Real Madrid before the break with a superb shot as well.

City dominated the run of the game early on but Real Madrid took the lead with a magnificent shot from Vinicius from the edge of the penalty area on Real’s first goal attempt in the 36th minute.

The defending champions were the better off after the break and imposed control of the game, but City equalized with a ball they collected under heavy pressure, before De Bruyne struck the net with a magnificent shot, to postpone the decision of the second leg next week.
