These accusations are part of a long campaign targeting the controversial actions of Hunter Biden, the son of the Democratic president.
The right accuses the president’s son of having used his mother’s name and his acquaintances when Biden was vice-president Barack Obama (2009-2017), to conclude suspicious contracts in several countries.
In a report released Wednesday, Republican lawmakers on a parliamentary committee overseeing the executive branch say other members of the president’s family, including his brother or daughter-in-law, have done business in China or Romania.
Parliamentarians rely on bank statements obtained thanks to the authority of their commission of inquiry, and explain that the relatives of Joe Biden have set up a mysterious network of companies to conceal the origin of the funds.
“The lack of transparency surrounding the affairs of the Biden family raises important national security questions,” they wrote.
They said that “when Vice President Biden was teaching ethics and anti-corruption courses in Romania, Hunter Biden (…) received more than a million dollars from a company run by a Romanian accused of corruption”.
Their report does not attribute any unlawful actions to Biden himself and his wife, nor does it discuss any direct relationship they have with the case. But during a press conference, one of these parliamentarians, Byron Donalds, said he was convinced that “Joe Biden was aware” about it.
In a statement, Democratic lawmakers on the committee accused their Republican colleagues of “selecting misinformation.”
For its part, the White House considered that accusing Joe Biden of serving the interests of China “on the basis of baseless allegations and personal attacks” was “absurd”, but was careful not to enter in details.
The adventures and actions of Hunter Biden, who has long suffered from drug addiction, is a weak point for Joe Biden, who, at eighty, announced his candidacy for a new presidential term in 2024.
But the president has never hesitated to deny it. Earlier this month, he reaffirmed that “my son has done nothing wrong, and I’m sure of it,” even though his son is facing a federal criminal investigation for tax evasion.
