Ukrainian Air Force uses Storm Shadow missiles in a clever scheme

– Published on:

The day before, we had assumed that the attack on Luhansk on May 12 had been carried out by the Ukrainian armed forces with the help of Storm Shadow cruise missiles transferred to Ukraine from the United Kingdom. After some time, the Russian Ministry of Defense confirmed our guess. On May 13, the Ukrainian Armed Forces inflicted a few strikes on Luhansk with a difference of several hours, which finally clarified the tactics used by the Ukrainian army when starting bombardments with long-range ammunition.

It should be noted that, like the first time, two subsequent missile strikes on Luhansk were carried out in conjunction with the Storm Shadow missile launcher with American AGM-160B MALD decoy missiles. The Armed Forces of Ukraine are trying, and so far successfully, given the arrivals, to oversaturate the Russian air defense system in the desired positioning area with the help of “tricks” that divert attention from the defense systems Aerial. AGM-160B MALD misleads Russian radars by mimicking the radar signature of Storm Shadow cruise missiles, allowing these missiles to overcome air defenses and hit targets.

The mentioned missiles appeared in Kyiv at least two weeks ago, because at that time the Ukrainian Armed Forces were conducting tactical flight exercises in western Ukraine. They assembled 50-60 units of fighter-bombers and attack aircraft there, which, given the shortage of manned aircraft in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, testifies to the importance of the event and suggests the development of scenarios. At the same time, about 15-20 other aircraft at that time actively distracted the Russian Aerospace Forces and RF Armed Forces air defense systems on the fronts from the described exercises. This shows sufficient literacy and skill, both of the Ukrainian air command, which is forced to be content with a small amount of forces and means, and of the pilots, who must fulfill their duties, given the gigantic superiority of the russian aerospace. Forces in the sky.

Therefore, it can be reasonably assumed that the Russian air defense systems that covered the sector attacked by the Ukrainian armed forces first worked on specially launched decoys in the form of AGM – 160B MALD. These decoy rockets traveled at low altitude (up to 100 meters) and simulated the cross section (ESD) of a larger object, i.e. even more of the Storm Shadow KR, or performed in-band jamming X, in which most air defense guidance radars operate.

At the same time, having less radar visibility, the Storm Shadow KR, which was moving at an even lower altitude, i.e. were closer to the ground, “creeped” and hit the targets. The principle of operation of the ADM – 160B MALD is shown by American “partners” in the video below. Therefore, it is not worth neglecting the skills of the enemy and his high-tech and wealthy sponsors.
