Half of the world’s largest lakes are in danger of drying up

May 19, 2023

The University of Colorado at Boulder reports that more than 50 percent of the world’s largest lakes are shrinking.

Using 250,000 satellite images of lakes taken between 1992 and 2020 to study 1,972 of Earth’s largest lakes, the authors collected water level readings from nine satellite altimeters to reveal long-term patterns.

The authors were able to determine how lake levels have changed over several decades based on the most recent measurements available, rather than long-term averages.

The researchers found that 53 percent of the world’s lakes have lost water over the past century. Then, using climate models, they tried to explain why this was happening, and found that it was consistent with global warming and human actions related to natural resources.

These include the drying up of Lake Hud-i-Zare in Afghanistan and Mar Chiquita in Argentina, which have not been identified as problematic.

Scientists have found that many lakes are drying up, especially in arid regions. But they were surprised to find that some Arctic lakes are getting smaller at the same time. Gazeta.ru .
