Thiruvananthapuram. A 32-year-old firefighter died while trying to douse a major fire that broke out at a government drug warehouse in Kerala’s capital Thiruvananthapuram in the early hours of Tuesday. A police officer gave this information.
The deceased has been identified as Ranjit and was posted with the Chakka unit of the State Fire and Rescue Services, they said. According to the official, the incident took place when a portion of the building that was engulfed in flames fell on the fireman. The fire brigade was engaged in extinguishing the fire at the time of the incident.
The drug godown, owned by the Kerala Services Corporation Limited (KMSCL), at Kinfra Industrial Park near Thumba caught fire around 1.30 am. According to a police official, the fire was first noticed by the security guard of the godown and Informed the fire department.
He told ‘PTI-Bhasha’, ‘A part of the building suddenly fell on the fireman, due to which he was buried under the debris. He was taken to the hospital, but he died during treatment. “According to the official, several teams of firemen were sent to the spot and the fire has been brought under control. Condoling the death of the fireman, General Education Minister V Sivankutty said in a Facebook post that the fire incident in the building was “unfortunate” and the government would conduct an inquiry into the incident.
