Researchers say the galaxy, known as GS-9209, formed around 600-800 million years after the Big Bang, and is the oldest of its kind discovered to date.
Lead researcher Dr Adam Carnal, from the University of Edinburgh’s School of Physics and Astronomy, said: “The James Webb Space Telescope has already shown that galaxies form much earlier and much earlier than predicted during the first billion years of cosmic history.”
He added: “This work gives us the first detailed insight into the properties of these galaxies, with a detailed graphic of the history of their formation, the fact that we also see a very massive black hole in this galaxy called the silent galaxy. ”
The researchers found that despite being about 10 times smaller than the Milky Way, GS-9209 has a similar number of stars to our galaxy.
