Islamabad: Asad Umar, the head of Pakistan’s ousted Prime Minister Imran Khan’s economic team and one of his closest aides, has resigned from all posts in the party. He has resigned amid the ongoing government crackdown against the opposition over the violence that took place on 9 May. Omar, the general secretary of Khan’s party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), resigned from all posts in the party on Wednesday, shortly after his release from Adalia Jail. He said in the press conference, that it is not possible for me to lead the party under these circumstances. I am resigning as PTI General Secretary and Core Committee member.
Omar said he was not resigning under pressure. However, he clarified that he was not leaving PTI but only resigned from all party posts. Omar said that the most dangerous incident happened on May 9 and it was an attack on the country’s military installations. Violent protests broke out in Pakistan on May 9 after Pakistan Rangers arrested ousted Prime Minister Imran Khan. His party workers vandalized a dozen military installations, including the Lahore Corps Commander’s House, the Mianwali airbase and the ISI building in Faisalabad. The army headquarters in Rawalpindi was also attacked by the mob. Police put the death toll in the violent clashes at 10.
The PTI has been facing pressure from the Pakistan government after Khan’s supporters ransacked and arsoned military installations on May 9. In a jolt to former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan, his close aide and former Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry on Wednesday resigned from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party. A day earlier, former Pakistan minister and Imran Khan’s close aide Shireen Mazari quit PTI and condemned the actions of Khan’s supporters who attacked sensitive defense installations across Pakistan on May 9.
