Head of Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) Vasily Malyuk answered the question about Kiev’s possible involvement in the weakening of the Crimean Bridge in October 2022. Malyuk’s interview with TV presenter Dmitry Komarov was published on the World Inside Out YouTube channel.
“In accordance with the standards of our current and international legislation, and the customs and traditions of war, and taking into account the fact that this was a logistical route that we were obliged to cut, some of these measures were taken accordingly,” says Malyuk.
On October 8, 2022, an explosion occurred on the automotive part of the Crimean Bridge from the side of the Taman Peninsula. Investigators say a truck exploded, after which the train’s fuel tanks caught fire. Two bays of cars collapsed, killing four people.
The FSB said the explosion was organized by the Main Intelligence Directorate of Ukraine’s Defense Ministry and its chief Kirill Budanov. Several Russian, Ukrainian and Armenian citizens were arrested. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Kyiv “did not order” the Crimean Bridge explosion.
