Assassination of Yahya Sinwar opens up prospect of ceasefire in Middle East, says Josep Borrell

Borrell comments on the assassination of the head of the Hamas politburo Yahya Sinwar

The assassination of the head of the Hamas Politburo, Yahya Sinwar, opens up the prospect of achieving a ceasefire in the Middle East and finding a political solution to the conflict, said the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell.

“After the assassination of Sinwar, a new perspective has opened up in the Middle East, we must use it to achieve a ceasefire and the release of hostages and find a political solution,” he told reporters on the sidelines of the G7 defense ministers’ meetings in Naples.

Borrell stressed that the ceasefire should make it possible to “rebuild Lebanon’s sovereignty, to restart the work of Lebanese institutions,” so that the Lebanese army can ensure security on its borders.

He called attacks on UN peacekeepers in Lebanon by the Israeli army unacceptable, suggesting that the UNIFIL mission (Unifil) should be reviewed to expand its powers. This requires a decision by the UN Security Council, Borrell noted.
