The 2026 NBA Draft lottery may have officially ended Sunday night, but the real chaos has only just begun.

The Washington Wizards walked away with the No. 1 overall pick after a disastrous 17-65 season, immediately igniting league wide speculation that BYU superstar AJ Dybantsa is now destined to become the next face of the franchise. Almost every major post-lottery mock draft released across the basketball world has projected Dybantsa to Washington, turning the draft race into one of the most anticipated prospect battles in recent memory.

For months, scouts remained divided between Dybantsa, Kansas guard Darryn Peterson and Duke phenom Cameron Boozer as the likely top selection. But after the lottery reshaped the order, momentum has rapidly shifted toward Dybantsa becoming the consensus No. 1 pick.

The 6-foot-9 BYU freshman has been described by evaluators as the modern prototype NBA wing. He combines explosive athleticism, elite shot creation and defensive versatility with the ability to dominate both in transition and isolation. Several scouts now believe his ceiling exceeds everyone else in the class.

Dybantsa’s freshman season at BYU only strengthened that belief.

He averaged 25.5 points, 6.8 rebounds and 3.7 assists while emerging as one of college basketball’s most unstoppable offensive players. His breakout campaign included a record-setting 43-point performance that shattered a long-standing BYU freshman scoring mark previously held by Danny Ainge.

The Wizards now suddenly possess the type of draft asset capable of transforming the entire direction of their rebuild.

Washington has struggled to establish a legitimate franchise cornerstone since the departure of Bradley Beal, and despite assembling intriguing young talent, the organization desperately needs a true superstar wing who can carry the offense for the next decade. Analysts believe Dybantsa fits that description perfectly, especially for the franchise’s rebuilding timeline.

Still, the race for the top of the draft is far from over.

Peterson remains one of the most gifted offensive guards in recent years and is widely projected to land with the Utah Jazz at No. 2 overall. The Kansas freshman entered the college season as the favorite to become the top pick before injuries and conditioning concerns created late season questions among executives. Despite those concerns, many scouts still believe Peterson could eventually become the best scorer in the class.

The Jazz suddenly find themselves in a fascinating position.

Utah’s rebuild already includes several promising young pieces, but Peterson’s combination of positional size, shot creation and perimeter scoring would dramatically raise the franchise’s ceiling. Some reports even suggested the Jazz could explore trading assets to move up to No. 1 if they become convinced Dybantsa is significantly ahead of Peterson.

Then there is Boozer.

The Duke forward continues to divide evaluators in the most intriguing way possible. Many scouts believe Boozer owns the highest floor in the draft because of his polished offensive game, rebounding instincts and NBA ready physicality. Others wonder whether his upside can truly match the explosive ceilings attached to Dybantsa and Peterson.

Most updated mock drafts currently project Boozer to the Memphis Grizzlies at No. 3 overall, where his frontcourt versatility could immediately address one of Memphis’ biggest roster concerns. The Grizzlies remain in transition after another disappointing season, and Boozer’s mature all-around game could make him one of the quickest impact rookies in the league.

Beyond the top three, the draft suddenly looks loaded with star potential.

North Carolina forward Caleb Wilson has emerged as a favorite for the Chicago Bulls at No. 4, while prospects such as Brayden Burries, Darius Acuff Jr., Kingston Flemings and Nate Ament continue climbing draft boards following strong freshman campaigns and pre-draft evaluations.

Burries, in particular, has become one of the biggest risers in the class.

The Arizona guard has drawn praise for his explosiveness, perimeter shooting and ability to thrive as both a primary scorer and complementary offensive piece. Several post-lottery mock drafts now place him firmly inside the top 10, with the Atlanta Hawks frequently identified as a logical landing spot.

What makes this draft even more fascinating is how perfectly the top prospects align with team needs.

Washington needs a franchise wing. Utah desperately wants elite shot creation. Memphis requires frontcourt stability. Chicago lacks defensive versatility. Brooklyn still needs a long-term offensive centerpiece. The fit between prospects and franchises feels unusually clean this year, making the post-lottery projections appear far more believable than in many previous draft cycles.

The latest NBA Draft Lottery Shockwaves coverage has only intensified debate surrounding the future direction of rebuilding franchises across the league.

Executives around the league, however, continue warning that the process is only beginning.

The NBA Draft Combine in Chicago is expected to dramatically influence the final order as player measurements, interviews and athletic testing begin to separate prospects even further. Several scouts reportedly remain extremely high on late risers who could force their way into the lottery over the coming weeks.

The ongoing 2026 NBA Draft Lottery discussion has also revived concerns over tanking and roster construction strategies around the NBA.

League insiders involved in scouting circles continue monitoring whether another surprise riser could disrupt the current top-five projections before draft night.

Recent conversations around NBA players warning Adam Silver about tanking and league competitiveness have only amplified scrutiny surrounding lottery positioning.

Elsewhere, the broader draft lottery chaos dominating the sports world continues reshaping expectations for franchises desperate to secure generational talent.

Washington finally won the lottery. The NBA world already believes it knows who the pick will be. But with Peterson still pushing hard behind him and Boozer refusing to disappear from the conversation, the battle for the top of the 2026 NBA Draft may only become more explosive from here.
