BENGALURU — August has five trading days left, including this one, and the thirty finished Tejas Mk1A fighters at Hindustan Aeronautics still have no engines in them.
That is the whole story of the share price, and on Tuesday morning the market marked it down again. HAL was quoted at ₹4,850.70 on the National Stock Exchange at 11:49 IST, down ₹55.30 or 1.13 percent on Monday’s close, and at ₹4,848.10 on the BSE. It opened at ₹4,890.20, never traded meaningfully above that, and worked down to ₹4,805.00 before recovering slightly. Turnover of 3.51 lakh shares is 30.5 percent of an average full day, a pace of 0.74 times normal. These are live intraday figures from a session that runs to 15:30.
That ₹4,805.00 low matters more than the price. On August 12, the day Hindustan Aeronautics reported a June quarter that beat expectations on every line, the stock printed a low of ₹4,803.40. Tuesday morning came within ₹1.60 of it. Whatever the market thought of those results has now been fully given back, and then some.

The opening print of ₹4,890.20 and the session high of ₹4,890.30 are effectively the same number, which means HAL has not traded above its opening tick all morning. That is the second consecutive session with that shape. Monday opened at ₹4,990 and never got above it either.

The pattern from Monday has repeated exactly. The stock closest to its own high has fallen the most, and the stock furthest from its high is the only one up. HAL is 5.8 percent below its peak and down 1.13 percent; Bharat Dynamics is 16.7 percent below its peak and up 0.77 percent. That is not the market repricing defence risk. It is profit-taking in the name with the least room left above it, running for a second day.

The Order Book Nobody Doubts and the Date Everybody Does
| Metric | Q1 FY27 | Change year on year |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue from operations | ₹5,515 crore | +14.4% |
| Net profit | ₹1,581 crore | +14.7% |
| EBITDA margin | 27.7% | Expanded |
| Order book at end FY26 | ₹2,54,538 crore | About 7.7 years of revenue |
| FY26 revenue | ₹33,089 crore | +6.8% on FY25 |
| Tejas Mk1A contract | ₹62,400 crore | 97 jets, deliveries from FY28 |
| Q1 figures as reported on August 12, 2026. Years of revenue cover is the order book divided by FY26 revenue, calculated by The Eastern Herald; it assumes a flat run rate and is a scale indicator rather than a schedule. | ||
There is nothing in that table to sell. Revenue is growing, margins are near 28 percent and the order book is the deepest in the sector at close to eight years of revenue at the current run rate. The market is not arguing with any of it. It is arguing about when the revenue arrives.
Chairman and managing director D K Sunil has said deliveries to the Indian Air Force should begin between August and September this year, once engine supply stabilises, with GE Aerospace due to send twenty F404s in the second half of 2026 and a first twin-engine batch in August. Today is August 25. There has been no handover announcement, and the company has not revised the guidance either.
At ₹4,851 the stock trades on 35 times trailing earnings and eight times book. For a state-owned manufacturer those are not defensive numbers. They are growth numbers, underwritten by an assumption that the order book converts into revenue on something close to the stated schedule. That assumption has one visible crack in it and it is not HAL’s fault: the company cannot make the engines, cannot compel an American supplier to ship them faster than a contested supply chain allows, and the liquidated damages it collects do not build aeroplanes.

| NSE closing prices and volumes; the final row is live intraday and not a close. The ₹5,149.90 intraday high was set on August 17; the highest close of the run was ₹5,099 on August 18. | |||
The volume column is the part worth a second look. HAL has come down from ₹5,099 to ₹4,851, a fall of 4.9 percent, on turnover that has thinned at almost every step. Tuesday morning’s 3.51 lakh shares extrapolates to about three-quarters of a normal day. Stocks that fall on light volume are not usually being dumped. They are being left alone, which is what happens when the people who would buy are waiting for one specific piece of news and the people who would sell have already trimmed.
Below ₹4,805.00 the chart is open down to ₹4,803.40, and beneath that there is nothing recent to point at. Above, Monday’s ₹4,990 and Tuesday’s ₹4,890.30 are the two ceilings the stock has failed at in consecutive sessions.
What this article cannot tell you is whether the handover happens before the month ends. HAL has said August or September. The Air Force has said nothing publicly this month. GE Aerospace has committed to twenty engines across the second half of the year without breaking that down by month. A handover ceremony at Nashik or Bengaluru in the next five trading days would vindicate a ₹3.29 lakh crore valuation. Its absence would not disprove it, which is exactly the difficulty with owning this stock right now: the thing everyone is waiting for has no date on it, only a month, and the month has almost run out.
Elsewhere in Tuesday’s session, Bharat Electronics tested ₹405 for the fourth time this month and held, Steel Authority of India was up more than three percent on more than twice a full day’s volume, and Larsen and Toubro was trading at the lightest pace of any large cap.
HAL’s June-quarter figures come from the company’s results of August 12, 2026. Intraday prices and the scrip identifiers were checked against the exchange’s own quote page for scrip 541154.
