MUMBAI — The most valuable private bank in India spent Tuesday morning doing almost nothing, at almost no volume, roughly two percent above the lowest price it has traded in a year. Fifteen minutes of Steel Authority of India’s morning turnover would have covered HDFC Bank’s entire first hour.

HDFC Bank was quoted at ₹727.45 on the National Stock Exchange at 10:28 IST, down ₹1.55 or 0.21 percent on Monday’s close of ₹729.00, and at ₹727.60 on the BSE. It opened at ₹726.60 and has held a range of ₹724.50 to ₹728.70, a band of four rupees on a seven-hundred-rupee stock. Volume was 23.82 lakh shares. These are live intraday figures from a session that settles at 15:30 IST, and none of them is a closing price.

The Nifty 50 was down 0.40 percent at 24,122.90 and the Nifty Bank 0.23 percent at 57,394.15, so the bank was very slightly outperforming a soft market by standing still.

Standing still is the story. At ₹727.45 the stock sits 1.73 percent above its 52-week low of ₹715.10 and 28.72 percent below its high of ₹1,020.50. A company worth ₹11.2 lakh crore has been marked down by more than a quarter over twelve months and is now drifting along the floor of that range on volume that has all but disappeared.

Where the Morning’s Money Actually Went

The clearest way to read Tuesday morning is not by price but by turnover, measured against what each stock normally trades. On that basis the Indian market has spent its first hour almost entirely outside the companies that dominate the index.

Morning turnover pace · The four busiest and four quietest of the 17 names in this series

Turnover pace is calculated by The Eastern Herald as the morning’s volume scaled to a full session, divided by the stock’s average daily volume over the previous 20 sessions. Indian equity volume is front-loaded into the first hour, so every figure in this column overstates the eventual full-day ratio; the column is useful for ranking the names against one another, not as a forecast of any of them. Market capitalisation is Screener’s at Monday’s close.

The four quietest names in the table are worth about ₹44.8 lakh crore between them. The four busiest are worth about ₹12.1 lakh crore, roughly a quarter as much, and are absorbing several times the trading interest. On Tuesday morning the Indian market’s attention and the Indian market’s capital are pointing in opposite directions.

HDFC Bank sits close to the bottom of that list, which is not a new position for it. This is a stock that has spent a year being left alone.

The Margin Is Why, and It Has Not Changed Since Friday

Nothing has come out of HDFC Bank since Monday’s close. The reason the stock is where it is remains the one it published on July 18, and it is a single number.

Standalone Indian GAAP figures from HDFC Bank’s Q1 FY2027 results of July 18, 2026. The bank calculates its net interest margin on total assets; ICICI Bank calculates its on interest-earning assets, so the headline gap between the two is wider than the underlying difference.

The loan book grew 15.4 percent and the deposits funding it grew 13.3 percent. That gap is the entire problem. HDFC Bank is lending faster than it is raising money, and the money it is raising is more expensive than the money it used to raise, because the share of cheap current and savings deposits has fallen from 34 percent to 32. A margin of 3.26 percent is what that arithmetic produces.

Everything else about the bank is in good order. A 1.17 percent gross bad-loan ratio is the cleanest of the large Indian lenders and 19.60 percent capital adequacy is the strongest. ICICI Bank, whose margin held at 4.36 percent in the same quarter, trades at 2.69 times book. HDFC Bank trades at 1.87. The market is not disputing the asset quality. It is pricing the funding.

Session low so far724.50Set in the first hour
52-week low715.10Only 1.73% below the current price
Intraday levels are as at 10:28 IST and can extend in either direction. One detail is worth noting from the table: the session high of ₹728.70 is below Monday’s close of ₹729.00, so HDFC Bank has not been in positive territory at any point on Tuesday.

What this article cannot tell you is what breaks the drift. HDFC Bank has given no guidance on where it expects the margin to settle, and the deposit competition driving it is an industry condition rather than a company decision, which means the bank does not control the variable that is setting its share price. The next scheduled disclosure is the September quarter. Until then the stock has a floor 1.73 percent below it that has held all year, no catalyst on the calendar, and a market that has plainly found other things to do with its money. The session has more than five hours to run and nothing here is a forecast.

Across the rest of the morning, Steel Authority of India had already traded more shares than it manages in an average full day, while Hindustan Aeronautics fell 1.89 percent to ₹4,813.20, through the low it set on Monday.

HDFC Bank’s June-quarter figures are drawn from the bank’s Q1 FY2027 results of July 18, 2026. Prices, volumes and the 52-week range are from the NSE and the BSE’s own quote feed for scrip 500180, captured at 10:28 IST.
