The 49ers arrived in Melbourne a full week before kickoff, a Shanahan organisational decision that made its point without requiring a statement. The Rams landed on Wednesday, roughly 26 hours before the 10:35 a.m. local start. Sean McVay declined to cite the timeline after the game.

Purdy found Mike Evans for a two-yard score in the red zone: Evans’s first touchdown in his first regular-season game as a 49er, nine seasons and 78 career touchdowns after departing Tampa Bay. In the third quarter, the reigning MVP lost possession under pressure and San Francisco recovered, killing a Los Angeles drive that had briefly suggested an answer. The league recognized Purdy, Bosa, and Warner as players of the game. The standard in Melbourne was straightforward: be more prepared than a division rival who landed 26 hours before kickoff.
The 49ers hold an early NFC West win while Seattle works through its quarterback situation heading into Week 2 and the conference settles into its 2026 rhythm. What Melbourne cannot settle is whether the Rams, at full preparation and playing games in Los Angeles, with Stafford in the form that earned him the MVP, are the team Thursday suggested. That question belongs to the next 15 weeks, on familiar ground.
