Apple Music’s new identity starts with an unusual design brief: let music make the image. Apple unveiled the rebrand on October 21, introducing a revised logo, a black-and-white app icon and moving visuals generated from sound rather than beginning with a finished graphic.

In its official announcement, Apple Music credits an original composition by Fred again.. and NEST Acoustics. The company describes the imagery as captured entirely in camera. Its behind-the-scenes film shows frequencies played through a rig that moves liquid, turning the notes into visible patterns.

Design reporter Katy Cowan’s October 22 account identifies the liquid as mineral oil and says the identity was developed with TBWA/Media Arts Lab. Individual notes were played through a transducer, which converts an audio signal into vibration. The recorded movement became the basis of the visual system; the composition also supplies a sonic signature.

That process should not be confused with the appearance of every finished asset. The app icon seen in the iOS 27.2 beta is black and white, replacing the familiar red design. Apple’s launch film also uses colorful animations. The campaign’s moving imagery and the small, static icon are different expressions of the same identity, not evidence that every part of Apple Music has become monochrome.

The rebrand gives the service a revised wordmark as well as a new icon. Apple Music’s name already appears across programming and high-profile partnerships, including its Super Bowl halftime show. A broader identity system matters in those settings beyond the app button listeners tap on a phone.

The new branding is already visible on Apple’s music-service website. Joe Rossignol’s October 21 report says the app changes are expected with iOS 27.2 and macOS 27.2 next week. That is a reported release expectation, not a confirmed date in Apple’s rebrand announcement. The service also extends across devices including HomePod, but the reports do not provide a separate branding timetable for every platform.

For listeners, this is an identity announcement rather than proof of new music-discovery features. Changes to the logo, wordmark and sonic signature should be distinguished from changes to the music catalog, audio capabilities or recommendation tools.

Apple’s current U.S. page lists the individual plan at $11.99 a month and the family plan at $19.99. Those are the published subscription prices, not new charges announced with this rebrand. The immediate visible change is the service’s presentation, with app distribution still tied to forthcoming software releases.
