MUMBAI — Three weeks before Navratri, the moment jewellers have spent much of the year preparing for, gold got cheaper on Wednesday. The 24-karat benchmark slipped ₹49 to ₹15,283 per gram in base markets, pulling bullion to its lowest level in two weeks as a strengthening dollar and hawkish signals from the US Federal Reserve pressed Comex prices down 0.59% to $4,292.90 per troy ounce.

The correction erases most of the gains recorded in the gold rate in India on September 22, when a brief softening in the dollar and elevated geopolitical risk premium had pushed 24K toward ₹15,332 per gram in Mumbai. Wednesday’s move lower was led by institutional selling on Comex as traders unwound positions ahead of end-of-quarter repositioning. The IBJA morning benchmark was set at ₹15,127 per gram, with city retail premiums placing Mumbai at ₹15,283, Delhi and NCR cities at ₹15,298, and Tamil Nadu markets at ₹15,375, where a higher state levy is standard.

Federal Reserve Board Governor Christopher Waller supplied the principal macro headwind. His statement that the Fed would deliver no rate cut in 2026 lifted Treasury yields and pushed the dollar index up 0.4% through Wednesday’s session. Gold, which offers no coupon, loses relative appeal as yield differentials widen. Waller’s comments aligned with remarks from two other Fed governors and have largely closed the market’s expectation for any policy easing this calendar year.

The broader October-September trajectory still tilts in gold’s favour heading into the festival quarter. After posting its first weekly gain in a month in the week ending September 19, the metal carries technical support around ₹15,000 per gram. Physical buying in India — which the World Gold Council has flagged as particularly sensitive to pre-Navratri timing — is expected to absorb periodic dips and limit any sustained correction. Jewellers in Mumbai’s Zaveri Bazaar reported steady footfall on Wednesday, with buyers focused more on design and making charges than on the benchmark movement.

Global prices on Wednesday reflected the same dollar-driven pressure. Comex settled at $4,292.90 per troy ounce, the weakest close in two weeks. The table below converts those prices across key international gold markets using an indicative USD/INR rate of approximately ₹95.00.

The four-tier regional price structure held intact: Tamil Nadu cities carry the highest retail premium, while Maharashtra and South Indian base markets sit closest to the IBJA benchmark.

Is gold a good buy in India ahead of Navratri 2026?

Price alone rarely determines Navratri buying decisions in India. Historical transaction data compiled by the India Bullion and Jewellers Association shows that festive volumes hold relatively stable across a ₹500-per-gram range on either side of the prevailing benchmark — the auspicious timing of the festival, not the price, is the primary driver. Wednesday’s dip to ₹15,283 per gram may offer modest relief on large purchases, but buyers should factor in the 3% GST and making charges, which can add ₹1,200 to ₹2,500 per 10 grams depending on design complexity.

Why did gold prices fall in India on September 24, 2026?

The immediate catalyst was a combination of dollar strength and hawkish Federal Reserve guidance. The dollar index rose 0.4%, making gold more expensive in non-dollar terms and triggering institutional selling on Comex. Fed Governor Waller’s statement that no rate cut was coming in 2026 reinforced that pressure. Domestically, the IBJA morning benchmark was set lower at ₹15,127 per gram, and retail prices in most cities followed suit.

What is the gold rate in Mumbai and Delhi today, September 24, 2026?

In Mumbai, 24K gold is priced at ₹15,283 per gram (₹1,52,830 per 10 grams) and 22K at ₹14,009 per gram. In Delhi, 24K stands at ₹15,298 per gram (₹1,52,980 per 10 grams) and 22K at ₹14,024 per gram. The difference between the two cities reflects Delhi’s marginally higher state and local levies. All prices exclude GST and making charges.

How does the US dollar affect gold prices in India?

Indian retail gold prices are benchmarked to the IBJA morning rate, which is derived from the London Bullion Market Association fix and Comex settlement in New York, converted to rupees at the prevailing USD/INR exchange rate. When the dollar strengthens, it takes fewer dollars to buy gold globally, which pushes Comex lower. The IBJA benchmark follows the next morning, and city retail prices adjust accordingly. Wednesday’s 0.4% dollar index rise was the direct reason the IBJA set a lower morning rate, flowing through to every city in the 38-city table above.

Gold’s next directional test comes Friday when the US personal consumption expenditure price index for August is published — the Federal Reserve’s preferred inflation measure. A reading above the 2.3% consensus estimate could give dollar bulls more momentum and press gold further. IBJA’s October forward contract rates, expected to be updated later this week, will give Indian jewellers a clearer signal on whether the Navratri season opens above or below Wednesday’s close.
