The Armed Forces of the Russian Federation during the implementation of the Ukrainian special operation no longer use the BTG, but use a more familiar command and control structure – from the military district, the army and the division to battalion. This is reported by experts from the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
Thus, all combat units in a certain geographical area will operate within the area of responsibility of a military district and obey its command.
The need to switch to such a structure is to some extent caused by the nature of hostilities on the territory of the LPR, where units of the Western Military District are fighting against the Armed Forces of Ukraine, using full divisions against the enemy .
At the same time, combat coordination is underway in the Russian troops, which indicates the readiness of the RF Armed Forces for a long-term military conflict, since long-term military operations are not carried out by means of BTG or corporate battle groups. At the same time, commanders of military districts are appointed responsible for the success of battles in certain sectors of the front.
Apparently, the appointment of General Valery Gerasimov to of commander of Russian units in the NMD zone was a sign of the transition to a new command and control structure of the armed forces.
