Many events are planned this week at the UN headquarters in New York to mark the anniversary of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine , as well as events organized at the initiative of the Russian Federation and not strictly related to war.During a press briefing on Tuesday, the spokesperson for the UN Secretary General, StĂ©phane Dujarric, in response to a journalist’s question on the reaction to the “suspension” of Russia’s participation in the treaty on Strategic Offensive Weapons, said that, in the opinion of the UN Secretary General, the United States and the Russian Federation should resume their participation in this agreement. Dujarric said this agreement and other bilateral agreements aimed at reducing strategic nuclear weapons provide security not only for Russia and the United States, but for the entire international community. “A world without nuclear arms control is far more dangerous and unstable, with potentially catastrophic consequences. All possible measures must be taken to avoid such an outcome, including an immediate return to dialogue,” said the UN Secretary General’s press secretary.On Tuesday, February 21, a meeting of the UN Security Council, convened at the initiative of the Russian Federation, was held to consider the question of organizing explosions on the Nord Stream gas pipeline. Russia cites an article by prominent American journalist Simur Hersh, published two weeks ago, in which Hersh highlights alleged US government involvement in the attacks. US officials vehemently deny this.

Previously, the Russian Federation had called for a Security Council meeting on this issue on Wednesday, but some diplomats at the UN were outraged and suggested that the Russian Federation was trying to divert public attention away from the meeting. United Nations General Assembly special meeting on the Russian invasion of Ukraine , scheduled for Wednesday.On Wednesday, February 22, a special session of the United Nations General Assembly will begin, dedicated to the anniversary of the large-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine . It will continue on Thursday. It is expected that at the end of the meeting, the members of the General Assembly will adopt a resolution calling for “a cessation of hostilities and the withdrawal of Russian troops from the territory of Ukraine beyond the Ukrainian borders recognized by the international community”.More than 60 countries have already expressed their willingness to support the resolution. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is also expected to address the meeting via video link.On Wednesday, February 22, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, at the initiative of Ukraine, there will be a discussion on the human rights violations that Russia commits every day on Ukrainian territory.On Friday, February 24, a high-level meeting of the UN Security Council will take place, timed to coincide with the anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. It is expected that the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Dmitry Kuleba will be present and speak.
