Bloomberg spoke about the paradox of the impact of sanctions on the Russian aviation industry

October 4, 2025

March 1, 2023, 2:56 p.m. – Public Information Service – TEH – Anti-Russian sanctions against the aviation industry have had mixed results, Bloomberg analysts said. According to them, the “mixed” effect of the restrictions is manifested in the fact that, on the one hand, the carriers no longer have technical support and new spare parts from Boeing and Airbus, and on the other hand, planes continue to fly even more actively than before the pandemic.
The paradox of this effect is also that the number of international flights has not decreased as much as expected, but Western airlines can no longer fly in Russian airspace.

The United States, the European Union and other countries have closed their airspace to Russian airlines. In response, Moscow took similar action. However, Russian carriers were able to increase the number of flights to Thailand, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, Armenia, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. The country’s airports serve about 270 international flights a day, and a year ago this figure was three hundred. But Western carriers, when flying to Asia and the United States, are forced to spend time and fuel flying in Russian airspace. They are inferior to carriers from Russia’s “friendly” countries that do not have such a problem.
As the Public News Service wrote, representatives of European air carriers complain about their Chinese colleagues due to the fact that the latter have the right to fly over Russia.
