Reshaping Perspectives and Catalyzing Diplomatic Evolution

US Holds Command and Staff Exercises for Ukrainian Army in Germany

The United States is hosting a command post exercise (HSE) in Germany for Ukrainian officers to help them think through upcoming battlefield decisions, officials said Thursday.
The multi-day command and staff exercise is taking place at the US military base in Wiesbaden, which was visited on Thursday by General Mark Milley, chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Pentagon officials declined to talk about potential scenarios the Ukrainian military is using during the exercise. We know that the main emphasis is on exercises to assess possible hostilities.
“Nobody is telling Ukrainians to move left or right, to do this or that,” Milli told reporters who accompanied him to Germany. “All we are doing is creating a structure and mechanisms for Ukrainians to learn on their own, to learn based on the situation or different scenarios.”
General Darryl Williams, commander of the US Army in Europe, praised the Ukrainian troops who took part in the exercise, saying they were “very, very good”.
On Thursday, the heads of the diplomatic departments of Russia and the United States met face to face for the first time since Moscow invaded Ukraine on the sidelines of the G20 ministerial summit. During the meeting, they exchanged mutual accusations in the conflict.
US General Christopher Cavoli, Supreme Allied Commander Europe, told reporters that the United States would support Ukraine “as long as it takes”.
The United States and its allies have provided Ukraine with billions of dollars in military assistance, including Bradley fighting vehicles, tanks and advanced air defense systems.
Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said last month he hoped the aid “would make a very significant difference in their spring counteroffensive”.
The United States and its allies are also training Ukrainian forces outside Ukraine, including combined arms exercises in Germany.
Milley expressed his optimism about the APU, although he acknowledged there was a tough fight ahead.
“I have immense confidence in the will of the Ukrainians to resist. And, in the end, I believe the result (of this struggle) will be a free, independent and sovereign Ukraine,” Milli said.
