The day after tomorrow, Qatar National Library will show the documentary "Mal Lawal: Linguistic Features of the State of Qatar", which sheds light on the official street signs in the State of Qatar, especially those written in Arabic using non-traditional or eloquent spellings that many speakers and linguists consider incorrect, but in fact they reflect the colloquial Qatari dialect. The documentary shows how these incorrect spellings have become visual icons that highlight the Qatari identity and Qatari heritage. The screening of the film will be followed by a discussion with three speakers from Qatar University, who are Dr. Radwan Ahmed, associate professor of social linguistics, and author of the research material presented in the video, and Dr. Sheikha Al-Kuwari, Assistant Professor of Anthropology, and Afra Al-Khulaifi, Teaching Assistant in the Department of English Literature and Linguistics.
