Tourist tax: who will pay extra for one night in hotels in St. Petersburg from August 1

The tourist tax should be introduced in St. Petersburg from August 1 – the corresponding bill is already subject to an anti-corruption expertise. While the payment will be established on an experimental basis.

The fee will be introduced for tourists over 18 years old. Those who have stayed in a hotel or hostel in the city for more than 24 hours will have to pay it. One night will cost travelers 100 rubles. This is the maximum amount provided by federal law.

Certain privileged categories of citizens will be exempt from the tourist tax. Among them, for example, are Heroes of the Soviet Union and Heroes of the Russian Federation, disabled people of groups I and II, holders of the Order of Glory, participants of the Great Patriotic War and combat veterans. In addition, local residents will not have to pay for a night at the hotel.

The tourist tax will be collected from tourists upon check-in. 100 rubles will have to be paid for each day of stay in a hotel or hostel. If the customer wishes to leave earlier, he will be refunded upon departure.

The money from the tourist tax will go to the development of tourism in the city. They will be spent on the design, construction, reconstruction, maintenance, improvement and repair of resort infrastructure.
