And he said in his speech during the presentation of the working paper of the Municipality of Al-Wakra entitled "The role of municipalities in achieving sustainable development" Within the closing panel discussion of the Gulf Engineering Forum, the recent wars, conflicts and natural disasters that the world has witnessed have caused enormous pressure on natural resources and infrastructure, which requires institutions to work systematically with a holistic system that takes into account economic and social development in parallel with environmental development to ensure an improvement in the quality of life. in cities.

He said that all these reasons formed a road map for us in Al-Wakra Municipality that contributed to changing the course of work away from traditional methods and moving it towards sustainable development while maintaining the performance of the service role required of us, in order to add value to the services of the municipal sector for all members of society And their environmental surroundings, pointing out that Al-Wakra Municipality established the Sustainable Development Projects Unit, through which we were able to implement a number of field and research initiatives and practices in the field of sustainable development, in cooperation with the educational sector, the health sector and the private sector, and a strong push was made towards spreading awareness in this field among students As the future generation and urged them to contribute in the field, voluntary and research, and the result of these efforts was the implementation of a number of research in the form of sustainable projects that were fully supported by private sector companies, including but not limited to the walkway for the elderly and people with special needs on Al-Wakra public beach, where it was implemented Completely with recycled materials and conforming to Qatari specifications QCS, which had a great impact on enhancing the role of young people in solving community issues and finding friendly solutions environmental. * Waste recycling m added. On the other hand, the municipalities should play a supportive role for projects based on the waste recycling industry, starting with their contribution to allocating the lands needed for these projects, supervising their commitment to technical and environmental standards, and then supporting their implementation within initiatives to spread the principles of safe disposal of waste among members of society, especially students. schools, and the Al-Wakra Municipality launched an initiative to get rid of electronic waste, which resulted in the recycling of nearly 800 tons of electronic waste, which would have caused severe damage to the environment if it had been disposed of by traditional methods. He said: Yesterday, Al-Wakra Municipality signed the R18 initiative, which was launched a while ago by the Waste Recycling and Treatment Department in the Public Services Affairs Sector as part of the Zero Waste Campaign, so that Al-Wakra Municipality will be the first municipality to adopt this methodology that seeks to create an advanced level of awareness about waste management, which requires redoubling efforts. In spreading awareness among members of the community and focusing on the integration of school and university students in the implementation of this initiative. He said that those initiatives and practices in sustainability implemented by Al-Wakra Municipality contributed to winning the award of the Global Learning Cities Network. These initiatives have been circulated to 220 cities in the world, and therefore it has become necessary to generalize such experiences to the municipal sector and to find a clear mechanism between all sectors and institutions to advance them. And reaching the desired goals in sustainable development in a way that achieves the national vision. * Environmental sustainability, in turn, said M. Soha Tafilia, that there is a fundamental role for municipalities in supporting environmental sustainability plans, and their efficiency in the green transition, but no matter how large the green buildings and environmentally friendly measures are, the human element and its development financially, spiritually and culturally remains the main condition in the development process, noting that the municipality focused on students as a basic rule In the process of green transformation and the humanization of cities, competitions related to the environment and green buildings were launched, and the winning projects were implemented on the ground. The municipality also formed a volunteer work team of high school students specialized in implementing the municipality’s short-term plan in the field of sustainable development at the level of Al-Wakra schools. Soha pointed out that the green transition and building sustainable cities is still fraught with many challenges, the most important of which is the fear of the high financial cost of green buildings, the ability to integrate all sectors in the green transformation process, as well as the challenge of formulating flexible mechanisms and laws to move from encouraging green practices to obligating its implementation. We hope to accelerate the process of transformation and humanization of cities to achieve prosperity and the highest standards of quality of life for all.
