The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry called on the citizens of Belarus to prevent the deployment of tactical nuclear weapons on the territory of the republic. Otherwise, the country will become a big “hostage of the Kremlin”, the ministry stressed.

“Ukraine calls on Belarusian society to prevent the implementation of intentions to deploy nuclear weapons on the territory of Belarus contrary to its obligations under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, which will further transform this country into a hostage of the Kremlin and will have catastrophic consequences for its future,” the message on the ministry’s website reads.

The agency also called on the G7 countries and the EU to warn the Belarusian authorities of the far-reaching consequences of the deployment of nuclear weapons and demanded the immediate convening of an extraordinary meeting of the UN Security Council.

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced yesterday that construction of a tactical nuclear weapons storage facility in Belarus would be completed by July 1. Previously, President Alexander Lukashenko had asked to deploy weapons in the country. Putin stressed that the procedure would be conducted without violating international agreements.
