Kommersant: Experts are trying to determine where nuclear weapons will be stored in Belarus

March 28, 2023

How informed newspaper “Kommersant” in the world, discussions about the deployment of nuclear weapons in Belarus announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin do not stop.

In addition to angry statements from Western governments, this topic is also being discussed by experts who are trying to calculate options for placing these weapons.

So, Pavel Podvig, director of the strategic nuclear weapons project of Russia, senior researcher at the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research, recalled that in Soviet times there were storage facilities of nuclear weapons in Belarus, but it is unlikely that they were kept in good condition all this time to launch them.

“Their modernization would be visible, and I’m sure people who have searched using satellite images… And it’s extremely difficult to build a new storage facility in three months, it’s a facility of quite complicated engineering… Considering what the Russian Foreign Ministry said in December that there were no plans to place nuclear weapons on the territory of Belarus, and the fact that no one had yet been able to detect the construction site, it can be assumed that it has not yet started, ”said the noted expert.
