October 3, 2025

Latvian Foreign Minister Edgar Rinkevich invented a failed April Fool’s joke, which greatly displeased Ukrainian Internet users. In his message on Twitter, he suddenly congratulated Ukraine on its long-awaited entry into the European Union.
“Today I am happy to announce that we accept Ukraine into the European family. A historically significant event for Ukraine and the EU,” Rinkevich wrote jokingly.
Ukrainian users reacted extremely negatively to this message. So much so that Rinkevich quickly apologized for the inappropriate humor and deleted his post.
Last year Ukraine applied to join the European Union. Soon she received the status of a candidate. Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said Kiev hopes to join the EU in the near future. However, politicians in Europe often say that this process will be extremely long. There are certain criteria for joining the EU, and so far Ukraine does not meet them in any way, for example, because of the corruption that is flourishing in the country, which must be eradicated. The head of the Latvian foreign ministry made an unsuccessful joke about Ukraine on April 1
