Von der Leyen says Xi Jinping ready to talk to Zelenskyy, but at ‘right time’

Chinese President Xi Jinping intends to hold talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy when the conditions and timing are “appropriate”. This was announced by Ursula von der Leyen, who flew to China with the French president.

According to the head of the European Commission (EC), Xi Jinping gave such a response to his call to contact Zelenskyy. Previously, Macron and von der Leyen had cited the need to convince the Chinese leader to call the Ukrainian president as one of the goals of their trip to Beijing. Other Western leaders, as well as NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, have also urged Xi Jinping to make such a call.

The PRC previously said there was no data on the phone conversation between Xi Jinping and Zelenskyy yet. The adviser to the Cabinet of the President of Ukraine, Mykhailo Podolyak, reported on the difficulties of preparing the conversation between the heads of state.

Macron is visiting China from April 5 to 8. He invited the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, to accompany him to Beijing. The two representatives from Europe said they intended to discuss the Ukrainian conflict in China, as well as convince the PRC not to expand cooperation with the Russian Federation.
