April 8, 2023

The Libyan Joint Military Committee (5 + 5) and the leaders of the military and security units from the western, eastern and southern regions confirmed their readiness to provide all forms of support to secure the elections in all its stages.

This came at the conclusion of the committee’s meeting with military, security and field leaders in various Libyan regions, in the presence of the UN Secretary-General’s envoy to Libya, Abdullah Batili, in the city of Benghazi. In a statement, the conferees affirmed their readiness to provide all forms of support to secure the elections in all its stages, and to support the efforts of the Joint Military Committee (5 + 5) and the Libyan Communication Committee emanating from it in expelling mercenaries and foreign fighters.

The participants in the meeting also agreed to start practical measures to address the problems of the displaced, the displaced and the missing, and to ensure their safe return, in coordination between the concerned security agencies in the various regions of Libya.

The committee members set the date for the next meeting, after the holy month of Ramadan, in the city of Sebha. The Benghazi meeting comes about two weeks after a similar meeting in the capital, Tripoli, during which it was agreed to reject foreign interference in Libyan affairs, to continue working on the path of unifying military institutions through the chiefs of staff, unifying security institutions and the rest of the state institutions, and rejecting fighting and violence in all its forms, along with Creating a unified government to supervise the elections.

The International Support Mission in Libya said: The aim of the meeting is to enhance confidence between the military and security leaders to support the political process, and to move forward in providing a suitable environment for holding free and fair elections during the current year (2023), and accepting their results from all parties.
