Russian retail stores are running out of stock of the popular board game Monopoly. informed RBC. Hasbro, which produces this desktop game, has left Russia, and the parallel import of its products authorized by the authorities is useless: these games are not translated into Russian.
You can no longer buy classic Monopoly in the Mosigra network and Hobby Games stores, the owner of which Hobby World calls itself the largest board game publishing house in Russia.
In one of Mosigra’s outlets, an RBC correspondent learned that classic Monopoly ended shortly after the New Year and its deliveries are no longer expected. The sales network support department confirmed that there was no information on the supply of Hasbro products. The Intellect-Toy store said Monopoly is currently out of stock and an order has been placed with its suppliers, but it’s unclear when it will arrive.
Detsky Mir claims he still sells Monopoly, but as of 2022 inventory. Additionally, the Hobby Games website sells the USSR Monopoly Collector’s Edition, and the Mosigra website sells some versions thematic (for example, the same Monopoly from the USSR or The Walking Dead).
“Monopoly” is also sold by some stores on Ozon and Wildberries, but games at prices comparable to the original (from 3,000 rubles) are marked in these markets with the inscription “One piece left”. In reviews of cheaper options (400-500 rubles), buyers suggest that these are “unofficial versions” and complain about their quality: for example, due to the lack of necessary cards or banknotes in black and white.
The original Monopoly is produced by the American company Hasbro, which specializes in the production of products for children, including a series of toys based on Star Wars, Power Rangers and My Little Pony.
Hasbro suspended its activities in the Russian market shortly after the start of the military operation in Ukraine, explaining its decision by the politically and economically unstable situation. Its 2022 report, published a few days ago, states that “all shipments and distributions of new content in Russia” are suspended, and by December 25, 2022, “all local stocks have been exhausted”.
Hasbro acknowledged that the exit from the Russian market had a negative impact on financial results last year, but did not provide specific data on this. According to RBC calculations, sales in Russia in 2021 accounted for around 1.8% of the company’s total revenue.
Monopoly, created in 1935 in the United States, is one of the best-selling desktop games in the world. In 1999, it was included in the Guinness Book of Records, because at that time it was ahead of all similar entertainment in terms of the number of players – there were 500 millions of them.
