April 10, 2023

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, in a meeting with Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko, said he would discuss the continued presence of the Russian military in Belarus and the possible “expanding of the scope” of cooperation.

They also talked about the preparation and coordination of the group of allied troops. The corresponding group also includes Russian servicemen stationed on the territory of Belarus.

“I am grateful to you that, despite all the difficulties, you keep several thousand Russian servicemen here. We have, as far as necessary, joined this process. And we prepare these guys with your officers, we conduct combat coordination,” Lukashenko said.

The President of Belarus added that “we must not relax”, because the representatives of Poland and Lithuania “started to get agitated” in the direction of his country. He thanked Shoigu for his help and support for the Belarusian army, which is defending the Union State on the western flank.

Earlier, Lukashenko said Belarus needs security guarantees from Russia in case of external aggression.
