Reshaping Perspectives and Catalyzing Diplomatic Evolution

BBC: Pentagon data leak reveals US was tracking UN Secretary General Guterres

A leak of classified Pentagon files showed the US was tracking UN Secretary General António Guterres, reports the BBC.

It is clarified that America followed Guterres as part of its desire to meet the interests of the Russian side. A number of documents also describe private correspondence between António Guterres and his deputy. Additionally, they contain candid observations by Guterres about the conflict in Ukraine and some African leaders.

Some of the data refers to a UN-brokered grain deal with Turkey. It should be noted that Guterres was so eager to maintain the agreement, “that he was ready to meet the interests of Russia”.

Additionally, the United States points out that the Secretary General’s actions in February undermined broader efforts to hold Russia “accountable for its actions in Ukraine.” UN officials were outraged by the suggestion that Guterres was soft on Russia, with one official saying the UN was ‘driven by the need to mitigate the impact of war on the world’s poorest’ .

“That means doing everything we can to drive down food prices and make fertilizer available to the countries that need it most,” he said.

Earlier it became known that the United States was spying on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Additionally, it was reported that the Pentagon could not make realistic predictions about the amount of data leaked to the agency’s news network that might be released to the media.
