The United States has long expected India, a rising power in Asia, to act as an important ally in countering China. For this reason America is also ready to pay some economic and technological benefits to India. In this way America can strengthen its Indo-Pacific strategy. But, given the sharp differences between the two, whether the US and India can eventually become allies remains an open question. Protecting its long-term and fundamental interests is always the starting point of all India’s foreign policies, India decides its foreign policy according to its interests and historical situation. But which way India leans could affect the outcome of the United States’ actions to contain China. Therefore, changes in India’s foreign policy often attract international attention. Despite some ideological similarities, there are fundamental differences in worldviews between India and the US. For example, during the Cold War, India refused to side with the US and opposed dividing the world into rival fronts. With this India became the leader of the Non-Aligned Movement.
India’s great aspiration is to become an influential independent power, leading the developing world free from colonial rule. Therefore, pursuing an independent foreign policy has always been a core principle of India. At present, the world is once again divided into two opposing camps, i.e. the West led by the US and the other side represented by China and Russia. Keeping in view its long-term interests, India does not want to choose between the two, as India’s fundamental interest lies in maintaining neutrality. On the other hand, America’s friendship towards India depends on America’s enmity towards China. For this reason, America is trying its best to include India in the “Quad” system and the Indo-Pacific economic structure. The US hopes to establish a world industry chain and supply chain without China, and India can become a major player in this.
Analysts generally believe that India will never become an ally of the US, as India’s non-aligned and independent diplomatic strategy will not change. This means that differences between India and America will remain. Even on the issue of China, India and the US are not completely on the same page. In fact, India will become a new challenge for the US in confronting China, as India’s strategy for handling international relations will become a major direction of global diplomacy in the 21st century. Cold War strategy will no longer apply to a future multipolar global order. India’s principles in non-alignment will get more support in the world and India will also become an important pole in world politics due to its independent diplomatic strategy.
