Speedmarathon in Germany – increased speed checks on roads from April 17

– Published on:

For the attention of motorists: on the roads of Germany, the action “Reset gas!” began. This week, police in several federal states will step up the fight against speed limit violators on the roads. This Monday (17.04.2023), the European traffic police network “Roadpol” announced the launch of the pan-European road campaign “Speedmarathon”. Therefore, drivers must be prepared to increase control.

For example, in Baden-WĂĽrttemberg, Brandenburg and North Rhine-Westphalia, the police intend to identify and remove from traffic as many speed offenders as possible – the action will continue for several days. Other federal states such as Bavaria and Hesse only announced the Blitzermarathon on Friday (04/21/2023). This means there will be more speed cameras from April 21, 2023 until early Saturday morning. Their numbers will increase ahead of schools, nurseries, retirement homes and traditional crash sites.

For what purpose is

“Speeding is a manifestation of reckless and selfish behavior on the road, leading to loss of life,” Saxony-Anhalt Interior Minister Tamara Sischang (CDU) said ahead of the marathon. Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann (CSU) pointed out: “Excessive and inappropriate speed was responsible for more than a quarter of all fatal accidents in Bavaria in 2022.”

In Germany for the 10th time

According to the Traffic Police Network, this is the tenth time the campaign has been run. In Bavaria alone, around 2,000 police officers, employees of municipalities and specialist associations are expected to be on duty. So far, not all federal states have announced whether they will participate in the action. In Germany, the “speed marathon” is usually called “Speedmarathon” or more commonly “Blitzermarathon”.

Moreover, the date of the next “marathon” is already known: from August 7 to 13, 2023, that is to say in the middle of the holiday season, the next “Speedweek” will be held.

How to prepare for action

Notice to drivers! Germany has banned the use of speed camera warning devices and smartphone apps that give the warning shortly before a trap occurs. Accordingly, they cannot be used on the day of the Blitzermarathon. Anyone caught risks a fine of at least €75 and a point in Flensburg. However, motorists can protect themselves from increased speed checks by knowing the locations of security cameras in advance. As soon as they are known, you will find them on news.de.

What sanctions can be imposed?

Depending on how much the speedometer needle exceeds the allowed speed, the punishment depends. According to bussgeldkatalog.org, anyone caught doing this in populated areas can expect the following penalties:
