US officials questioning Argentina for “caution” in relation to China

– Published on:

“Laura Richardson, commander of the US Southern Command, spoke about China’s influence in Latin America while speaking with Argentine officials during a visit.” On April 17, the Argentine media gave such an assessment of the US-Argentina talks. Earlier, Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman, Number 2 in the US State Department, also visited Buenos Aires and asked Argentina to be “careful” in developing ties with China.

Not only Richardson and Sherman, several US officials have recently arrived in Argentina. In early April US Republican Senator Cornyn expressed “concern” about cooperation projects between Argentina and China while visiting Argentina. Subsequently, Christopher Hansen, chairman of the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission, visited Argentina and claimed that there exist risks and “discomforts” in cooperation between Argentina and China in the field of nuclear energy. Then, along came Richardson and Sharman. They were all talking about China.

Why is America doing this? According to Argentine media analysis, after taking office, US President Joe Biden strengthened the policy of suppressing China, and he does not want to see China’s cooperation with Latin America or the world strengthen. Argentina is a large country in Latin America. In recent years, the friendly cooperation between China and Argentina has continued to deepen. In February 2022, Argentina became the first major Latin American country to formally join the Belt and Road Initiative. It is a practical cooperation between developing countries with mutual respect, mutual benefit and win-win. However, in the eyes of the US, China-Argentina cooperation challenges its interests and threatens its hegemony, so the US has tried its best to disrupt and sabotage it.

Speaking of nuclear power projects, in April 2022, US State Department Assistant Secretary of State for International Security Affairs Ann Ganzel while visiting Argentina criticized the technology provided by China for the Atucha-3 nuclear power plant project and said that it “Does not meet international norms and has design and safety issues”. However, a research report released by the Nuclear Energy Company of Argentina states that these allegations “lack scientific basis”.

The facts tell people that the US is still trying to control Latin America and make them its “raw material suppliers”, “product dumping markets” and “cultural colonies”.

Time has changed. Latin American countries yearn for unity, cooperation and development. In June of last year, the ninth Summit of the Americas hosted by the US was widely boycotted by Latin American countries, making it the least attended session of leaders. In January this year, the Seventh Summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States issued the Buenos Aires Declaration, forming a consensus against foreign interference and hegemony.

In the late 19th century, former Mexican President Porfirio DĂaz once said that his country was “too far from God and too close to America”. What is happening in Latin America today confirms the views of the Argentine media, “At a time when emerging market countries are striving to develop, Latin America is about to change its historical fate of being ‘too close to the US’. Could.
