Antonio Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, affirmed the commitment of the international organization to support the Sudanese people and their desire for a future in which they enjoy security and peace, and to stand by them in these difficult times.
Guterres said, during a debate in the UN Security Council on multilateralism today, "The United Nations is not leaving Sudan.. We are reorganizing our presence there so that we can continue our support to the Sudanese people".
He explained that the United Nations had transferred hundreds of employees and their families from Khartoum and other places in Sudan, and that it would continue its work with its personnel inside and outside Sudan. It confirmed "I am in constant contact with the two parties to the conflict, and I call on them to defuse tensions and return to the negotiating table"adding "We must all do everything in our power to bring Sudan back from the brink".
The Secretary-General of the United Nations warned that the violence in Sudan "It warns of a catastrophic ignition inside the country that could spread to the entire region and beyond"Referring to the situation in Sudan "continues to deteriorate".
Guterres had earlier called for an immediate cessation of hostilities, the restoration of calm, and the start of dialogue to resolve the current crisis in Sudan.
